What to look for in a running coach

I’ve seen a few posts in various platforms like reddit and Facebook asking for recommendations for running coaches. Running coaches are for every runner - you don’t need to be an elite to benefit from a coach, and there are a lot of coaches to chose from these days. So how do you go about picking one that is the right fit to help you meet your goals? Below is a list of questions that I think can help you if/when you decide to make an investment in your training.

  1. What certifications do you have?

There are a variety of organizations that offer courses and tests, RRCA, USATF, UESCA, and VDOT are a few that come to mind. In these days of social media influencers, just because someone is “fast” and/or has a lot of followers doesn’t mean they have the knowledge to help you with your goals.

  2. What is the average length of time you work with your athletes?

Have you had relationships with your runners over a long period of time or do you work with runners for their specific goal race training cycle?

  3. What kind of communication is included in your plan?

Is texting, email, and communication through a platform like Training Peaks or Final Surge included, or do I get a check in weekly or monthly?

  4. Are the plans you offer off the shelf or built specifically for me and my goals?

  5. Do you have testimonials, referrals or case studies from runners you have worked with?

  6. Do you offer a free phone consultation?

A brief call or video conference is usually helpful to see if you will be a good fit.

  7. What is the financial commitment?

Is it month-to-month or a minimum time period? How can I cancel if it’s not working out? When do you increase your rates?

  8. Do you provide other services like strength/cross training or nutrition guidance?

This is an important one. Unless the coach you are looking at hiring has certifications or advanced degrees in nutrition, physical therapy, strength training, etc., they should refer you to individuals that have those types of degrees and stick to what they are the expert in.

  9. Are you insured?

  10. What are your expectations for your runners, and can I share my expectations for what I am looking for in a coach?
